Marine archaeology The marine archaeologists at the Maritime Museum preserve wrecks and other maritime archaeological remains. About marine archaeology Marine archaeology is about examining the traces man has left on the sea floor, in lakes, on beaches and on islands in order to learn about earlier societies. Wrecks in the Baltic Sea Nowhere else in the world are there so many well-preserved timber wrecks as in the Baltic Sea. Remains of about 20 000 ships or smaller craft have been discovered. What does a marine archaeologist do? A marine archaeologist is specialised in archaeological finds that are in the water or close to it. Consultancy services The Maritime Museum offers consultancy services within marine archaeology. Contact us before planning projects and physical activities on land or under water.
