Your way of life would not be possible without trade. Trade is not possible without shipping. The history of merchant shipping is a story about you and your world.

Our new major exhibition Shipping & Shopping is one of the museum’s biggest since it opened in 1938.

Sweden has a long and eventful shipping history. And we are more dependent on shipping today than ever before.

The exhibition’s various themes allow visitors to follow shipping history from the point of view of trade:

• Why do we pursue trade?

• Why is trade dependent on shipping?

• Why do ships look like they do?

• What is it like to be a sailor?

• How have our habits been affected by shipping?

• How did shipping work in the past, what does it look like today and what will it be like in the future?

Clever interactivity

Shipping underlies our everyday life. One of the goals of the exhibition is to show these connections and provide a context – to show how our demand for something sets off a trade chain. Other goals include making visitors curious about the subject and having fun together. There is a lot of clever interactivity in the exhibition, says Tove Frambäck, its producer.

The exhibition was designed with a focus on accessibility and the environment. It contains both new construction materials and new ideas about pedagogy.
