What was life like for LGBTQ+ people at sea and on shore throughout history?

During Stockholm Pride, the Swedish National Maritime Museum invites you to a special guided tour exploring queer stories from Sweden’s maritime past. Journey through four centuries of history, from the 17th century to the present day, and discover people who challenged the norms of their time.

The tour highlights women who enlisted in the navy disguised as men, the art of Eugène Jansson, and the Swedish America Line, which became an important refuge for many gay men. Through personal stories and historical objects, we explore how ideas about gender, identity, and relationships have changed over time.

Join us for a new perspective on maritime history and the lives of those who navigated both the seas and society’s expectations.

The tour is offered in English Tuesday–Sunday at 3 pm. Swedish-language tours are available daily at 11 am and 2 pm during Stockholm Pride.
