Stockholm’s history has always been shaped by water. The city rests on islands, and long before bridges connected its districts, boats were the natural way to get around. The exhibition A City on Water opens on 7 November 2026.

A City on Water is an exhibition about Stockholm’s travellers, boats, and a mode of transport that remains an essential part of city life today.
The Swedish National Maritime Museum has received a collection of water transport signs from Stockholm’s public transport system. The donation comes from the non-profit organisation Stiftelsen Skärgårdsbåten. These signs, together with a newly produced film about how Stockholmers have travelled across the city’s waterways in their everyday lives over five centuries, are now on display in the museum’s Dome Hall.
Join us on a journey from the rowing women of old Stockholm to today’s engine-powered ferries.
