Leisure boats for all!
Recreational boating has deep roots in Swedish society, with one leisure boat for about every eight adult Swedes. As a result, Sweden tops the world rankings in boat ownership.
Nearly one third of Swedes travel by leisure boat every year. Swedish recreational boating culture is somewhat unique in the world since boats are widely used among different social classes. Boating
for all was one aspect of the folkhem, meaning “the people’s home”, a concept created by political parties during the late 1920s. It urged integration of the working classes in order to replace the traditional class society with a more harmonious, all-inclusive one.
What was only for the privileged few during the early 1900s has become a popular pastime for many.
The exhibition is available until September 3rd, 2023.
